“I sat next to him”- Liverpool defender reveals what he told “angry” Darwin Nunez at half-time vs Ajax

Andrew Robertson talks about what he told Darwin Nunez before his goal against Ajax

Deep into the first half against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League, Roberto Firmino, from almost a yard out from the goal, squares the ball to Darwin Nunez, only for the Uruguayan to hit the post. Liverpool were up 1-0 at that point. Understandably, Darwin would have been angry with himself for missing the goal.

One would expect a #9-wearing Liverpool striker to go for goal, but such is the unselfish nature of Bobby that he thought of his team-mate who was just starting to find his feet at the club. However, that matter aside, the Reds would have enjoyed the result of the game, eventually finishing 3-0.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool and did so from a beautifully played precise pass from the skipper Jordan Henderson. Darwin scored Liverpool’s second goal of the night quite early in the second half, and Harvey Elliott finished the scoring matters.

Speaking of Darwin’s missed chance early in the first half, and the Uruguayan naturally being angry with himself, here is what Robertson told the striker at the halfway stage (via BT Sport- h/t BBC

):

“We had control. Darwin was really angry with himself at half time. I sat next to him at half time and told him I would put a cross in to his head for him to score.”

Darwin Delight for Liverpool

With a tall figure like Nunez making those central runs, it becomes a bit easier for the fullbacks to ping their ball into the box instead of just hoping for someone to get their heads onto it. In this case against Ajax, Robbo played the ball from a corner kick for Nunez to slot it past the keeper.

With this goal, Darwin has two goals in his last two appearances in this competition. He scored a goal against Rangers last time around, and this just follows. He has been in good form, and also scored against West Ham in the league a few days ago. Much contrary to the social media talk against him, Darwin is starting to find his feet at the Merseyside club.

In 13 games across all competitions this season, Nunez has scored six goals and has an assist to boot as well. Hopefully, we can see more goals from the Reds’ potential transfer-record signing.

After not being included in the matchday squad against Nottingham due to injury, Nunez took his chance well this time around by scoring a goal against Ajax. God willing, there is loads more to come from the attacker.
