“He has to”- Arsenal legend unhappy with Darwin Nunez’s effort in missed opportunity vs Leeds United

Ian Wright talks about Darwin Nunez and his performance in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 loss to Leeds United

Much like the rest of his Liverpool career, Darwin Nunez enjoyed a mixed bag of performance against Leeds United in the Reds’ 1-2 loss against Jesse March’s side. The runs he made were inch-perfect and gave a tough time to the Leeds’ backline.

However, his finishing was lacking on the night. Nunez had multiple chances at goal and a few of them were truly golden opportunities. Having said that, Illan Meslier, the Leeds’ goalie had a wonderful performance and blocked everything sent his way.

Nunez has not had the best of starts to the Premier League but has started to find his feet on Merseyside of late. Nunez has three goals from his last four starts for Liverpool across all competitions, but one would have expected him to get on the scoresheet against the Midlands outfit on Saturday.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, here is what Arsenal legend Ian Wright had to say about the 23-year-old Uruguayan’s performance and a particular chance against The Whites (h/t The Mirror):

“I think Nunez has got to do better there, he has to lift it over him.”

The keeper was charging towards the ball that Mohamed Salah played down the line for Nunez. The Uruguayan could have opted to chip it over Meslier.

However, Nunez went for power and the ball was parried away by the French goalkeeper. It was not the only chance that the former Benfica striker was unable to put to boot though. He had four shots on goal as per FotMob

and created as many chances for his teammates as well.

Moreover, his defensive work rate is something which is commendable. The Uruguayan almost ran into the Reds’ box to recover the ball and then played a smart pass forward for Salah to run into.

Hopefully, his performances going further into the season show results in terms of Goals and Assists instead of his movement.
