Liverpool vice-captain James Milner underlines the inconsistencies at the club

Speaking to the club ahead of the UEFA Champions League encounter against Napoli at Anfield, Liverpool vice-captain James Milner spoke about the unpredictable nature of the club’s form right now.

After securing a good result against Manchester City, winning 1-0, one would expect the Reds to get the better of opponents in the lower half of the table naturally. However, on the contrary, Liverpool lost back-to-back games against teams in the relegation zone.

An away loss against Nottingham Forest means that Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to win an away game in the league this season. However, the even more disappointing fact is that Leeds United beat the Reds at Anfield which brought an end to Virgil van Dijk’s loss-less streak on the ground.

Speaking of the inconsistencies in the Reds’ performances this year, here is what Milly told the club’s official website:

“I think if it was one easy fix you’d know and you’d fix it. Obviously, to be a successful football team, there are so many little things you need to do well – and at this moment in time, we’re not doing enough of those consistently enough. We have shown very good performances this year, but we haven’t had that consistency and that’s something we need to improve.”

Liverpool have been extremely unpredictable this season, and not in a good way. The Reds are losing games wherein they are favourites to get a positive result. Moreover, too many draws have also derailed the season for Klopp and his troops.

Milner on the tough run for the Reds

Currently, in the ninth position, things certainly do not look good at the moment, and the upward surge shall only begin when the players put in more than what they have at this point in time.

Senior players including the likes of Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk need to step up and provide an example for the rest of the squad. Apart from that, the inconsistencies can also be narrowed down to an injury issue at the club, cornering Klopp into not having a fixed line-up for most games.

Unfair to point out a few players when the team as a whole has not been at its best, but the likes of Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold have not been at their best, which has put the club in difficult circumstances on the pitch. However, there is just enough time for them to ensure there are no hiccups in their game anymore.

The Champions League campaign seems alright at this stage, but domestically, we need to start getting results to make sure of a top-four finish. Qualifying for the Champions League should be the bare minimum we achieve this season.
