Jurgen Klopp gives verdict on Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League win against Napoli
Speaking in an interview after Liverpool’s sensational win against Napoli as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp is delighted with his team after the display they put in against the Italian giants.
Liverpool became the first team to beat Napoli this season across the league and the Champions League, managing to secure a 2-0 win against Luciano Spaletti’s side thanks to late goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.
Despite getting the win against the Italians, Liverpool still finished second in the group behind Napoli due to the overall result which ended 4-2 in favour of Spaletti’s side. However, yesterday’s performance was a statement.
The Reds have not had the best of times in the Premier League and with the English top-flight competition as good as gone for Klopp’s men, it was essential that Liverpool focus on the Champions League.
Especially after losing the first leg to the Italians, yesterday, the Reds had a point to prove. Ultimately, it was the sheer quality of the Liverpool attackers that shone through on the night at Anfield.
Speaking about the performance, Klopp was rather defiant and said that this was what he expected from his team.
“I saw the reaction I wanted to see. We all agreed we had to show a reaction and we did in a very difficult game against a really good opponent. We were compact so it was never easy for Napoli to play out.”
The result was far from the perfect game from the Reds, but ultimately the three points mean more in boosting the morale of this team than the fact that there are chinks for Klopp’s team to iron out.
Especially after the demoralising losses that they suffered at the hands of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, being the first team to beat Napoli this season is surely set to give them a lot of confidence.
