Referencing a moment in Liverpool’s 2-1 Premier League win against Newcastle United earlier this season, Fabio Carvalho said Harvey Elliott showed glimpses of a “young Lionel Messi”.
One particular moment in the match at Anfield saw Alisson Becker hoof the ball to Elliott, who went past two defenders before switching the play. It resulted in a big chance for Luis Diaz, who failed to capitalise on it.
When talking about that moment on the club’s official YouTube channel
(h/t the Express), the Portuguese playmaker said:“It’s like a young Lionel Messi!”
Elliott then repaid the compliment and made a tongue in-cheek-comment:
“Lucho [Luis Diaz] was against me that game, didn’t want to score but that’s fine. Fabio Carvalho, here he is. Wow, he’s better than [Luis] Figo I’ve heard [as Carvalho was being subbed on].”
Liverpool trailed to an Alexander Isak in that game, who scored in the 38th minute to hand manager Eddie Howe’s side the lead. Roberto Firmino equalised around the hour mark.
Ten minutes after the Brazilian’s goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold was brought off for Carvalho. The former Fulham attacking midfielder was a menace during the game and got a deserved goal in the 98th minute to win the game 2-1.
This match is still Newcastle’s only defeat this campaign. The Reds, meanwhile, have stuttered in domestic competitions despite being nearly flawless in their UEFA Champions League group.
Elliott and Carvalho both arrived on Merseyside from Fulham and the two share a close bond. Both have been transformed as central midfielders from their previous attacking roles with the Cottagers, although they do play down the flanks from time to time.
They are two of the most talented youngsters in the squad but are undoubtedly players for the future. Right now, Liverpool fans wouldn’t want to see so much of them on the field even if they value the two teenagers.
