Liverpool to battle both Manchester United and Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez

According to Portuguese news outlet Record (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are set to battle both Manchester United and Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez.

The Reds were linked with a host of midfielders this summer, though no one arrived on a permanent transfer. Arthur Melo was brought in on deadline day on loan from Serie A side Juventus but is yet to make any positive impact at Anfield.

However, things could change in the January transfer window. It is believed that the Merseyside club are ready to battle it out for SL Benfica midfielder Fernandez in the winter transfer window.

Fernandez joined Benfica after the end of last season from River Plate. Since then, he has established himself to be a regular for the Portuguese side. The Argentina international has played in 23 games so far this season in all competitions, scoring three and assisting another four in the process.

Liverpool need to revamp their midfield. Jordan Henderson and James Milner are not young anymore, while Thiago Alcantara has struggled with fitness. The likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also failed to stay fit when necessary.

Young midfielders with experience are needed and Fernandez fits that bill. The 21-year-old has only played in Europe for a few months but has already caught the eyes of some of the biggest clubs on the continent.

But the player won’t come cheap. It is believed that it would take paying the midfielder’s release clause to pry him away from Benfica this winter. The 21-year-old is said to have a whopping £105 million release clause in his current contract that runs till 2027 (transfermarkt).

City and United will provide tough competition for his signature and the Reds need to move fast if they want to win this race. It remains to be seen if the Merseyside-based club is willing to pay the big release clause for the young midfielder this winter.
