Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson claims Luis Diaz is one of the best in the world
Following a horrific knee injury against Arsenal back in October, Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has had to sit out since. The 25-year-old was among the Reds’ best players in the early weeks of the season, wherein the squad as a whole struggled to get going.
Diaz’s national team Colombia failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, and his captain at Liverpool, Jordan Henderson believes that it is sad that a top player like the former FC Porto winger is missing out on playing in the coveted tournament.
In 12 appearances across all competitions until his injury, Diaz had scored four goals and got three assists to boot as well. Even though the numbers do not seem great as such, it was the intent and the way he played which made him stand out in the initial phases.
Here is what Hendo had to say to Win Sports (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“In the World Cup you want the best players in the world, and Luis Diaz is certainly one of them,”
“He has lit up the Premier League since he came and it was a disappointing moment when he got an injury for us. Of course, you want the best players here.”
Diaz has for sure been one of Liverpool’s better players ever since his arrival back in January earlier this year. In 38 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, Diaz has 10 goals and eight assists.
The most notable of the goals would be the one against Tottenham Hotspur in a close 1-1 draw last season. His presence on the pitch was felt when he sat out due to injury, but he will be eager to play a big role in the second half of the season for the Reds.
Lucho up and running
The latest news on his injury is that he is “up and running”, and will be a part of the mid-season training camp alongside other Reds stars including Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara in Dubai.
With a fully fit Diaz and other players also back from a substantial break from football, the Reds would be eager to go all guns blazing in the latter stage of the league campaign and also carry their form in the UEFA Champions League.
