Liverpool and Everton tipped to battle for African star playing in 2022 World Cup

Liverpool and Everton tipped to be in race for Ghana and Ajax star Mohammed Kudus in January

Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton have been tipped to be in the race for the signing of Ghana and Ajax star Mohammed Kudus in January, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf (h/t Express).

The Reds are considering making a move for the 22-year-old in the upcoming winter transfer window. Liverpool’s hierarchy have been closely watching the attacker ahead of a possible approach in the coming months.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s team are not alone in their pursuit of Kudus. The Toffees were linked with the 22-year-old in the summer of 2022 and are still interested in acquiring his services.

The Reds have been eyeing the attacker for a while now. Back in 2019, Liverpool were touted as a potential destination for the Ghana international. However, Ajax snapped him up from Denmark outfit Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2020.

Kudus is currently in Qatar with the Black Stars at the World Cup. The 22-year-old scored a brace against South Korea in their second group-stage fixture to hand the African nation their first points after a 3-2 win.

Everton are currently languishing just above the relegation zone in the Premier League. The Goodison Park side have been underwhelming for some time now in the English top flight. Frank Lampard has been unable to steady the ship of our Merseyside rivals.

Their standout attacking options include the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray, amongst others. However, injuries have been an issue for the Toffees.

On the other hand, Liverpool have a handy number of players up top to rely on. We recently signed Darwin Nunez as well to bolster our attack. However, with injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, the Reds have lost a bit of depth up top.

If it comes down to Liverpool and Everton vying for Kudus’ signature, most fans would be confident about Klopp’s team having the upper hand. However, game time is hard to come by at the Reds, considering the competition in the forward line.

Then again, he could be played as a number 10 behind the front three, which could be an exciting prospect.
