According to journalist Ben Jacobs, while speaking to Give Me Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have rejected the chance to sign Leandro Trossard from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Jacobs claim that Trossard has entered the final year of his current contract and as such, has been offered to Liverpool alongside Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, Jurgen Klopp and co have rejected the chance to sign the versatile forward from the club which shows the direction that the club is willing to take. Jacobs said:
“We know, for example, that Trossard at Brighton is being put in the shop window by his agent. He’s been offered to Manchester United, he’s been offered to Liverpool and he’s been offered to Chelsea. Liverpool are not interested.”
Hopefully, the club has learnt from the move from Arthur Melo that a stop-gap signing is not the solution to the issues at play. Rather, a constructed approach of assigning primary targets and using the resource in acquiring their services is a better way to go about it.
Ideally, the position that Trossard plays for Brighton is fully covered with depth of space in our current first-team squad. Hence, spending unnecessarily on a player who, more often than not, would make appearances off the bench would not be reasonable for us.
There is no doubt of the ability of the player and what he can offer, having recently scored a hat trick against us in the league but it remains to be seen whether he can continue his good form on a regular basis.
It’s also not surprising to see Trossard being eager for a move to a ‘big’ club given he is starting to play some of his best football at the age of 27. Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking at other options such as Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, who is at the FIFA World Cup with Spain.
For now, the decision to not go for the player sounds very reasonable and if the player continues to shine in the league, another consideration on his profile could be given once the summer transfer window opens up. That is, if other clubs don’t snap him by then.
