Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk talks about takeover after FSG sale decision
Virgil van Dijk talked about the fact that Liverpool FC will remain one of the biggest brands and biggest clubs in World Football even though the current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), chaired by John. W Henry intends to sell the club.
Recent reports from The Boston Globe, also owned by Henry, claimed that FSG look to partially sell their stake in the club, to fund transfers and channel more money towards the club in order to compete with the spending power of Liverpool’s rivals including both Manchester clubs.
In all fairness, FSG as a whole have been excellent owners, and it was under them that the club won their first Premier League title in 30 years. However, with a number of Liverpool’s rivals strengthening themselves in recent seasons, FSG came under a lot of criticism for not pooling enough money into the club’s kitty for new signings.
Speaking after the 3-1 victory over the USA in the last 16 of the World Cup, here is what Virgil had to say about the sale situation (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“We are a very established club, one of the biggest in the world and that will stay that way. Whoever comes in to fill in those roles, they will do very well. I am aware of everything that is happening.
“Whether I am taking it in and doing something with it right now, I don’t think so because the full focus is on the World Cup but hopefully everything will be sorted and clarified when I am back. At this point, I am definitely not thinking about it.”
Rightly so, his complete focus is on bringing his nation glory at the World Cup. However, he believes that there is no doubt over the fact that Liverpool will remain one of the most elite clubs in the world, and it will stay that way throughout.
Virgil hopeful about new owners
Moreover, it seems from his words that Van Dijk has enough confidence in any potential new owner to do very well. It is almost like he knows who will take over a partial stake from FSG, but hopefully, his words prove to be true and Liverpool’s spending power sees a surge in the near future.
At the present moment, the squad depth is not very great, and it has been tough for Jurgen Klopp’s men to compete with their rivals in the league this season. By the coming transfer window hopefully, the Reds strengthen their squad, especially the midfield.
