Danny Murphy believes Chelsea and England star Mason Mount would be “perfect” for Liverpool
Former Liverpool ace Danny Murphy believes Chelsea and England star Mason Mount would be “perfect” for Liverpool. The ex-Reds midfielder feels there will be a lot of takers for the 23-year-old’s signature.
Mount’s future at the Stamford Bridge side is currently uncertain. The midfielder’s current contract with the Blues expires in the summer of 2024. And the 23-year-old is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.
As a result, Liverpool and Juventus have been linked with the England international. Speaking on Vibe with Five on YouTube (h/t Liverpool Echo), Murphy expressed his surprise at Mount being linked with the Reds. However, he would be happy to see the midfielder at Anfield.
”He’s playing week in, week out at one of the biggest clubs, who are going to challenge you’d think with the money they’re spending. So, I think that’ll get done [his contract].
“I’m just surprised it’s come to this point, he’s been linked with Liverpool – he’d be perfect for Liverpool – but if he doesn’t sign there would be plenty who’d take him.”
Chelsea have been underwhelming for some time now. The Blues have struggled to keep pace at the top of the table. With Thomas Tuchel’s sacking, Graham Potter is also finding life difficult in West London.
The Stamford Bridge side’s academy graduate has not been consistent either. Mount broke into Chelsea’s first team in the 2019/20 season. In the previous campaign, the 23-year-old made 32 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists.
However, his numbers have dwindled this season and the midfielder’s performances have not been up to scratch. Mount has also struggled to keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s team at the World Cup. He has not started for the Three Lions after the first two fixtures in Qatar.
Liverpool’s middle of the park has a lot of quality players. However, injuries have been a big issue for Jurgen Klopp in the current campaign.
The Reds also evidently need a quality, creative midfielder capable of making things happen in the final third. For now, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho are still a bit inexperienced.

Thus, it would be interesting to see someone like Mount playing under Klopp. However, will Chelsea be willing to let their academy graduate go to a direct rival? It remains to be seen.
