As per Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool transfer target Adrien Rabiot is also subject to a move to the Reds’ Premier League rivals Newcastle United. The 27-year-old Frenchman runs out of contract next summer (Transfermarkt), and the Magpies are looking at him as someone who could bolster their midfield.
Currently playing in the World Cup, he has a goal and an assist from four appearances in the tournament. Rabiot has a lot of experience across the top-tier and the UEFA Champions League and in 145
appearances for his last club Juventus across all competitions, he has 11 goals and eight assists. Before that, back in his home country, during his spell with Paris Saint-Germain, he scored 24 goals and got 14 assists in all competitions in 227 appearances. He could be a strong addition to the team in terms of quality, but the rivalry with Newcastle United in the race could be a hindrance for Liverpool.
A good passer of the ball, and very similar to Thiago Alcantara in the way he passes the ball around in the midfield, he has shown in the top tier that he is an excellent player in transition.
However, Newcastle’s interest means that a move to the West Midlands could appeal to the Frenchman. The Magpies are backed by their uber-rich Saudi owners that can give some of the best clubs in the world a run for their money – literally.
Following Real Madrid’s interest in the Magpies’ midfield maestro Bruno Guimaraes, Rabiot could be an enticing option for Eddie Howe’s side. The signing makes sense for either team, but the only thing is that the Reds have a much better chance at qualifying for the UEFA Champions League than their rivals.
However, the irony of the fact is that at this point in time, Newcastle have a better standing in the league table, and are a project for the future. Liverpool’s interest in Jude Bellingham might mean that another big-name signing might not be possible, but that is also mere speculation.
Hopefully, the Reds enjoy more than just one signing in the January window and that results in Liverpool strengthening their pursuit of a top-four finish. 27-year-old Rabiot is a good option but getting drawn into a potential bidding war could be something to keep an eye out for.
A number of Liverpool’s players are in a mid-season training camp in Dubai and would hope to recharge their batteries before the season re-opener against Manchester City on 22nd December.
