Transfer News: A new contract offer has been tabled for Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have tabled a new contract offer for Roberto Firmino, who is out of contract at the end of the season (Transfermarkt).

Firmino is one of the first breakthrough stars of the Jurgen Klopp era and transformed the no.9 role perceived by many. At the age of 31, many believe he could be on the decline in the near future.

His defensive ability to press from the front and drop in between to allow the wingers to act as the main forwards was crucial for the sustained success of the team.

With the signing of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Luis Diaz from FC Porto, Firmino saw reduced game time as compared to previous seasons.

Hence, many were of the opinion that the Brazilian could end up departing Anfield if the same situation persists with Juventus previously interested in the player.

Now, it is being claimed that Liverpool have upped their efforts to keep hold of the Brazilian and have offered him new terms, which have not been accepted yet. Firmino is a team player and that was shown by the manner in which he conducted himself when making appearances off the bench and just waiting for the right opportunity.

He did exactly that and when the opportunity came, due to unforeseen injuries to key players, Firmino grasped it with both hands and is a big reason that we are still in contention for achieving the top-four qualification.

In this season alone, Firmino has contributed to 13 goals (nine goals and four assists) in 21 appearances across competitions this season and hence, is not showing any blatant signs of regression.

It would definitely be advantageous to the team if the Brazilian puts pen to paper on a new contract deal as a player of his quality and experience can help the team a lot in a time of transition.
