Conceding just once until the quarter-finals, Alisson has been one of the best players in the World Cup this year. The Liverpool shot-stopper beat Ederson Moraes to a place in the starting XI and has proved his worth between the sticks.
His form might come as a shock to many given Liverpool’s shaky defensive performances this season, but a neat observer would know that if it was not for Alisson, the Reds would have been in much deeper waters.
The former AS Roma keeper is arguably the best keeper in the Premier League right now, and his balance in shot-stopping and distribution is something Liverpool have enjoyed a lot ever since his move to the Reds back in 2018.
Former Premier League goalie Petr Cech spoke on the Seaman Says Podcast spoke about how Alisson was excellent ever since his days on the Roma bench playing second fiddle to Wojciech Szczęsny, and here is what the former Chelsea goalie added:
“I think it comes from his natural personality as well, when you see him there is composure there is calmness. I remember when Wojciech Sczczesny went to Rome and he was with him there, and he said that he had this Brazilian guy on the bench who was so good and that everyone would know it.”
“It didn’t take long. It’s nice to see when things go right and he’s had a big impact at Liverpool, and he’s been brilliant at the World Cup so far,”
There is hardly any mention of world-class performances by Ali as he has set the standard so high, it is almost like a norm for him. There have hardly been any “bad” performances from the 30-year-old, and hopefully, he has a lot more to show, for both club and country.
Even for his club, he will be critical as ever in order to secure a top-four finish, as he was back in 2021. Ali’s last-minute header against West Bromwich Albion secured a UCL spot finish for the Reds, and even this time around, we hope for him to contribute to the Reds’ pursuit of a top-four finish.
Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has been critical of Alisson’s composure on the ball. But nevertheless, the fact that he is starting important games for both club and country will automatically filter out all the negativity from the outside.
Unfortunately for Ali, the fact that Brazil got knocked out on penalties vs Croatia would mean that he cannot win the World Cup this time. But that gives him enough time to refresh his batteries and come back stronger for the club.
He did his part. Penalty shootouts are often decided by luck and fingers can’t be pointed towards him for the loss.
