Steven Gerrard hails Jordan Henderson’s performances with England at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has praised the current Reds’ skipper Jordan Henderson for his performances for England at the World Cup in Qatar. Hendo scored England’s opener against Senegal in the Round of 16 and retained Gareth Southgate’s faith in him after the manager started him for the second successive game.
The Reds icon was quick to back his successor and said that the experience he carries is extremely valuable to this young England team, and a figure like that is important in every dressing room.
Moreover, Jude Bellingham also responded to the criticism Hendo was facing for his “bland, boring style of play” and said called out what he believed was “bullshit” and also claimed that the Liverpool skipper is massively underrated on a technical level.
Speaking about the Liverpool captain, here is what Stevie G said (h/t Daily Mail):
“His last performance he was obviously Man of the Match, very well deserved, and he shut a few critics up that for some reason seem to point fingers at Jordan.”
“Being a midfielder, being around Jordan on the daily basis, to see the sacrifices, his dedication and what he puts into his own preparation, the hard work that he puts in, I’m not surprised that he’s putting in this level of performance and I’m delighted for him.”
Hendo’s goal came in clutch, at a time wherein England probably needed it the most to derail a strong opponent as Senegal, and from thereon the momentum carried on. Hendo will certainly be as crucial as ever in England’s midfield against France if he starts the game.
Hendo in fine form
In such games, a player like Hendo who could control the tempo of the game and help out his rather young teammates might be extremely beneficial.
With Brazil knocked out, that leaves only four Liverpool representatives left in the World Cup. Hendo and Trent Alexander-Arnold shall face Ibrahima Konate’s France, and Netherlands’ skipper Virgil van Dijk would hope to win against Argentina the quarter-final as well.
Moreover, with his goal, he would have increased his self-confidence and desire to contribute more than he already has for so long. He deserved it as well, for how resilient he has been on and off the pitch despite criticism.

Altogether, even with his low-creative output kind of style of play, Hendo remains as crucial as the next person in Gareth Southgate’s team, and he showed his class with his performances in the World Cup so far. Hopefully, he wins a World Cup medal before returning to Merseyside.
