Liverpool make contact with SL Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez

As per the Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have made contact with SL Benfica’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The 21-year-old midfielder has been a target for the Reds for a while now, and his performances in the World Cup would have certainly increased his asking price.

His contract lasts until 2027 (Transfermarkt) and the ball would obviously be in Benfica’s court in terms of negotiations. Moreover, Rodger Schmidt would want to maximise his club’s profit, as any sale would include a 25% clause which the Portuguese outfit has to channel to Fernandez’s older club River Plate.

Keeping that in mind, profit maximisation will be Benfica’s top priority and hence, the price might plummet even more. Therefore, it is important for the Reds to sketch out their plan of action and prioritize their targets, given their prolonged pursuit of Jude Bellingham.

Real Madrid are also interested in the player, and the Reds will need to fend off their pursuit of the player in case the Reds’ claim is concrete. Liverpool do not possess the spending power of most of their rivals, and hence, that could be a reason Benfica could reject the Merseyside giants.

Enzo to Liverpool?

However, in any case, it would be wise if the Reds have an alternative or two as the player has caught the attention of Europe’s elite, and any club would not have it easy to go after Fernandez after his top-class performances throughout this season.

In 24 appearances for his club this season, he has three goals and five assists and has been performing on a consistent basis. He could well and truly be a good addition in case the Reds decide to sign him up, but the thing comes down to prioritizing among the plenty of targets.

In all likelihood, Liverpool cannot possibly buy all their targets, and Enzo is probably among the most expensive ones, and for that matter at least, the Reds need to be wary of other things happening in the market as well.
