Liverpool linked with Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur

According to Argentine media outfit El Crack Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), the latest midfielder to enter the list of Liverpool transfer targets is Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur.

The 25-year-old Uruguayan international moved to Tottenham from Juventus in January 2022 and since has been a rigid pivot in the Spurs’ midfield. He was one of the best players for Uruguay in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, even though they shockingly did not make it to the Round of 16.

The player also stands linked with a move to Manchester United, and the Reds’ biggest nemesis in recent years, Real Madrid. There is no doubt that he would be a great addition to the Reds’ midfielder given the inconsistencies and injury frequencies of the current lot, but whether or not the Reds could afford the player is the actual question.

With fellow countryman Darwin Nunez also around, he will not be short of any company, that is for sure. The Mirror also reports that the Reds could attempt to swoop the player in if he proves to be a cheaper alternative than Liverpool’s primary transfer targets including Jude Bellingham.

The central midfielder has five goals and six assists in 39 appearances across all competitions for Spurs. He alternates playing defensive midfield and central midfielder for Antonio Conte’s side, and his versatile nature is something the Reds could target as well.

Bentancur at the Reds?

Following Fabinho’s poor form for the Reds, a backup signing or getting someone like Bentancur on board who will put in more than just a challenge for a spot in the starting XI, getting the former Juventus player on board at Anfield seems wise.

However, the financial aspect of the deal is something the Reds need to vary of. Bellingham would certainly not be available for less than £131m per The Athletic and in case that seems too much, the Reds can always choose alternatives like Bentancur and other midfielders linked with a move to Liverpool.

Whether or not Antonio Conte would let go of a player to a league rival is a big question. Moreover, the player is still to fully settle down at Spurs and is only starting to make his way as a top midfielder in the league. On that trajectory, it is hard to think that Tottenham would let go of Bentancur.
