As per AS (h/t The Express), Liverpool now join Arsenal in the race to sign Spanish youngster Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid. The 18-year-old has nine appearances
in the Spanish top flight and could be on the move next January. The right-back could prove to be a long-term prospect for Mikel Arteta’s side, who are themselves among the teams with the youngest average squad age in the Premier League. As far as Liverpool are concerned, we certainly do not have the youngest of players.
The teenager also has four caps for the Spain U19 squad. The fact that the transfer window opens in just a few weeks’ time means that the teams sniffing around the player will have an actual chance of getting his signature.
As a matter of fact, the player was part of Real Madrid’s Youth Setup from 2014-18, post which he moved to CD Leganés before signing for Real Valladolid in 2020. Even though he would certainly not be a very expensive buy, Liverpool are pretty much stacked when it comes to the right-back position.
One would expect Trent Alexander-Arnold to continue with the same consistency and beyond for at least 10 years given he does not leave the club, and we recently signed young Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen.
With the pair at the helm, the addition of another right-back at this moment seems unnecessary and the Reds should perhaps divert their attention towards getting on board a first-team midfielder, someone like Jude Bellingham.
As far as Arsenal are concerned, their manager Mikel Arteta tends to give youngsters plenty of opportunities and the fact that Fresneda is a Spaniard much like the former Arsenal midfielder also helps a tad bit.
But when one thinks about it, there is no harm in backing up a position. Especially at a team like Liverpool, where one injury literally collapses the entire team.
