Team News: Liverpool midfield star uninvolved at Dubai training camp

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones not pictured in Dubai Training Camp

Curtis Jones was indeed a part of the 33-man squad Liverpool squad for the mid-season training camp in Dubai. However, the 21-year-old has not been prey to the club photographer yet. Moreover, even in the 3-1 defeat to Lyon, Jones stood uninvolved.

The central midfielder missed the initial part of the season due to a stress fracture. Making seven appearances across all competitions this season, one would have wanted more contribution from the youngster, but injuries played spoilsport.

Interestingly, in the Reds’ last two fixtures before the international break against Southampton in the league and Derby County in the EFL Cup, Jones was not a part of either squad leading to speculation of another injury setback for the Reds.

Luis Diaz also recently flew back to Merseyside after the recurrence of his knee injury in October. Moreover, Naby Keita, who is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Reds this season, was also involved in light-team training in the latest session.

The second ‘Scouser in our team’

Even though he has been around the first-team setup since 2018, the player is yet to cement a place in the starting XI. In 81 appearances across all competitions, he has eight goals and ten assists. Injury situations this season gave him the platform to prove his worth, but instead, unfortunately, even he sat out with injuries for the initial part of the campaign.

Hopefully, it is just a coincidence that he has not been prey to the cameras yet, and we see him in action as soon as possible. With a number of players only returning from World Cup duty, Jones could get more game time.

Moreover, following the injury of Luis Diaz, a chance for Jones to shine on the left flank also opens, but surely not for the long-term as by the looks of it, he does not possess the speed a winger naturally has.

Recently signing a long-term contract with the club, he would hope to make his way into the starting XI more often than not for a start, and then give those performances Steven Gerrard saw in him during the Scouser’s time at the academy.

Liverpool’s next game in a competitive sense is against Manchester City on 22nd December followed by a visit to Birmingham to play Aston Villa on Boxing Day. Hopefully, Jones is in action before that.
