Liverpool target Sofyan Amrabat makes Atletico Madrid admission

Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat sees himself linked with a move to Liverpool following his top-class performances in the World Cup, leading his team to the semi-finals of the tournament wherein they lost 2-0 to France.

He stood extremely pivotal in Morocco’s successful run and a number of Premier League clubs including the Reds and Tottenham Hotspur share an interest in the player. The defensive midfielder has an excellent work rate in both aspects of the game and any team could benefit from having a player of that profile in their squad.

Amid the multiple names the Reds stand linked to in the upcoming transfer window, and over the summer, Amrabat is someone who has entered the picture comparatively late, that is after his performances in Qatar.

But in what could be a major blow to the Reds, Amrabat speaking to Marca via Liverpool Echo made the admission that he is fond of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone’s style of play and he could in all likelihood, move to the Spanish capital:

“I’m proud to be linked to top clubs like Barcelona and Atlético. But I’m a Fiorentina player, I respect the club and I’ve a great relationship with the president.

“[Diego] Simeone? We have a good coach at Fiorentina too but… yes, I like El Cholo’s [ Simeone’s] style [of play]”.

Even though Atleti have not been in the race for the player, they could potentially enter the race for a player who is in top form. Even though the Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken multiple times with Amrabat’s representatives, it does not seem from his words that he is too keen on moving to the Reds.

Amrabat at the Reds?

At Liverpool though, he has the perfect opportunity to start games more often than not as Fabinho has not been at his best, and there is no other like-to-like replacement for the Brazilian in the Merseysiders’ squad.

Liverpool see themselves linked with plenty of central midfielders, but not many who can play the role Fabinho does, and hence, it will be interesting to see whether Liverpool change their formation going forward. playing a flat-out 4-3-3 with three central midfielders instead of the current two.

Only time will tell whether the Reds actually get to sign him or not, but at the moment, with his words, it seems a far fetch for Liverpool to actually get their man.
