Liverpool linked with a move for Juventus and USA midfielder Weston McKennie
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are showing interest in signing Juventus’ American midfielder Weston McKennie. The 24-year-old central midfielder is an important part of the pivot, for both his national team and club.
McKennie is capable of turning up in multiple midfield roles including on the right side and is also a more than capable defensive midfielder. The former Schalke midfielder is also a transfer target for Chelsea and their city rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Mail suggests that the Reds’ interest to sign the player as early as January might be subject to only a loan move. Liverpool got Arthur Melo on board on deadline day in the summer window in a similar fashion, but we can only wait and see whether a loan deal for McKennie goes through or not.
Liverpool are an extremely injury-prone side, and the idea of adding depth to the midfield, even if it is temporary, does not seem like a bad idea at all. Signing a new player of McKennie’s skill level to bolster the midfield can help alleviate some of the injury problems the Reds have faced.
McKennie to Liverpool?
In 91 appearances across all competitions for Juventus, he has 13 goals and four assists. Given how the Reds’ midfield has been inconsistent, McKennie can probably make it to the starting squad on more than one occasion. With the added depth and competition for starting spots, the team can rotate players and give key players a rest when needed, helping to prevent burnout and further injuries.
At 24, his prime years are ahead of him, and the Reds could benefit from having a player for the future as we have a very old squad in comparison to our rivals. Signing a new player can help to address the issue of an ageing midfield by bringing in fresh talent and ideas, which can help to keep the team competitive and performing at a high level at least in the foreseeable future.

It is good to see that the Reds are continuously linked with top midfielders all over the world, but having so many options might tamper the focus of the recruitment team, and it is necessary to have a primary target, and channel all resources towards bringing that one player to the club.
