Keifer MacDonald of Liverpool Echo writes that seven-time UCL champions AC Milan are ‘carefully monitoring’ the contract situation of Liverpool’s 27-year-old Guinean midfielder Naby Keita.
The player joined Liverpool for a then-club record fee of £52.75m from RB Leipzig in 2018. One could actually say that his stay at Merseyside has been extremely underwhelming and has not really lived up to the hype built up ahead of his move.
His best season in terms of goal output came last season wherein the central midfielder scored four goals and added a further three assists in 40
appearances across all competitions. Even then, he missed out on 10 games due to injury issues. That sums up his Liverpool career so far. Ever since making the move from the Bundesliga, he has missed 90 games over a four-year stay at the club. Even when available, he was certainly not at his best, and inconsistent performances found a way to creep in.
Moreover, he is yet to feature for the Reds in a competitive fixture this season, and by the looks of it, he will all but for certain depart the club at the end of the current campaign, when his contract runs out (Transfermarkt).
Having said that, AC Milan’s interest in the player comes at more or less the right time from a personal perspective for Keita. He can move on from the dreadful time he has had dealing with injuries at Liverpool and try to make a name for himself in Milan in case a move goes through.
Even the Italian giants would have had a good look at the player when the Reds met AC Milan in a mid-season friendly in Dubai not very long ago. Hopefully, the future holds only good for Keita as he is a bloody talented player, who just couldn’t replicate his success in Merseyside.

Milan themselves have a Liverpool target on their books in Ismael Bennacer. Hopefully, if there is something that the clubs could work around bringing the Algerian to Liverpool and shipping back Keita there, it would be a win-win situation for either party.
