Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp gives an update on Roberto Firmino’s injury

Roberto Firmino unfortunately was not a part of the squad that faced Manchester City in the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup on 22nd December. Liverpool’s #9 saw himself injured in training two days prior to the fixture and hence had to sit out.

The Brazilian was not a part of Tite’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar wherein the other two of his fellow countrymen at Merseyside went until the quarter-finals of the tournament. Alisson was instrumental in Brazil’s campaign, but Fabinho did not enjoy much game time.

Speaking ahead of the Reds’ Fourth Round Carabao Cup game against Manchester City, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp spoke about Firmino and his injury situation and spoke about why he missed out on playing in the fixture.

Here is what the German told Sky Sports before kickoff via the club’s official website:

“We play mainly with the players who could do all the sessions now and had a break – apart from Bobby, who unfortunately got injured two days ago in training.

“Not a big one but big enough for this period. That’s why Darwin is now starting. He could’ve started anyway but Darwin is starting now.”

Injuries galore for the Reds

Darwin Nunez began the game for the Reds and had an okayish game, but there is a lot of scope for improvement for the 23-year-old Uruguayan international. With Bobby’s current injury scene, the only two recognised frontline players available at the Reds include Mo Salah and Darwin himself.

Even Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota sit out due to injury issues and hopefully, they return back from their layoffs ahead of schedule to give the Reds a full-strength side and we can go all the way in the rest of the competitions after the loss to City in the EFL Cup.

The January window gives the Reds an opportunity to get in fillers for the injured players, at least on loan and hopefully, we can continue to pose a challenge on all fronts at full strength instead of struggling with injuries like we have been for the last few seasons.
