Liverpool squad update for Aston Villa as the Reds have to do without the services of six stars
Normalcy resumes this Boxing Day for Liverpool as the league restarts after an eight-week halt for the FIFA World Cup. Heading into the international break, the Reds won their last fixture 3-1 against Southampton and currently sit in sixth place on the points table with six wins, four losses and four draws. Here is the squad update for the Reds via Liverpool Echo.
The Reds’ first competitive fixture post the break was against Manchester City on the 22nd of December in the Carabao Cup and the Reds, unfortunately, saw themselves out of the competition following a 3-2 loss to the reigning Premier League champions.
James Milner, who started in right-back for the Reds against Pep Guardiola’s side over the week will stand sidelined due to a hamstring injury the vice-captain picked up in the same game. And Roberto Firmino is still to recover from his calf injury picked in training a few days back.
Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who were facing a substantial amount of time on the sidelines since before the international break will not be back in action until February or early March as the road to recovery is long for the pair who are out due to major injury issues.
Liverpool Squad Update vs Villa
Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones will return to team training next week as the former is still on a break post the World Cup and as far as Curtis is concerned, the details of his injury are not public information yet, and we will have more info on him only in some time.
Apart from the mentioned hexad, the rest of the squad should be fit and ready to restart the Reds’ league campaign against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side on Boxing Day. Hopefully, we get off to a good start after a tough start to their league campaign.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was only fit to make the bench last time around, but given the injury situation around Milly, the Ox could be in for his first league start since February, when he played 80 minutes against Norwich in a 3-1 win.
