“We have to chase”- Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp refuses to call it quits in Premier League title race

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool are still in ‘pushing distance’ of the Premier League title race

Following a lacklustre start to their league campaign in the 2022-23 season, Liverpool, ahead of the league restart find themselves in sixth place on the points table with six wins, four losses and as many draws in the English top tier.

Speaking ahead of his team’s match against Aston Villa on Boxing Day in Birmingham which marks the restart of the league proceedings, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that the Reds are not very far off from the summit of the table, and could find themselves closer than they would imagine come the end of the campaign.

Currently 15 points adrift from Arsenal, who are topping the league charts, the Reds are more or less in good company with Chelsea and Manchester United around the Merseysiders on the table as well.

Via the Evening Standard, here is what the German had to say about the Reds still potentially in the race to finish in the UCL spots and also about still being in the reckoning for the Premier League title race:

“We obviously left a gap between us and the much more exciting spots in the table, but we consider ourselves in the moment within punching distance and that means we have to chase and that’s what we will do.”

The gaffer sounds confident

Most Liverpool players coming back to play club football after the international break are in top form and would hope to replicate the same wearing the Red of Liverpool as well. Being in a good space mentally is extremely important, and by his words, the gaffer seems confident in his side to be within ‘punching distance’ of the league title.

The Reds have three almost immediate fixtures as soon as the league restarts, as they will face Aston Villa on Boxing Day, Leicester at home on New Year’s eve and a trip to London to face Brentford on 2nd January.

Winning these games will give the Reds a huge momentum boost going deeper into the season and will obviously put the Reds in a better position on the table as well. With a number of players only returning from international duty, it will be interesting to see how the Reds form up given their tricky situation in context to team selection.

However this season ends, one thing is for sure. It is extremely crucial for the Reds to reinforce at least one of three departments come the transfer window next summer. Ideally midfield, but anything sounds great at this time. Hopefully, we get Jude Bellingham.
