Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler talks about Darwin Nunez and his recent form
In Liverpool’s recently concluded Carabao Cup fixture against Manchester City which saw the result swing Pep Guardiola’s way in a 3-2 thriller, Darwin Nunez was one of the major talking points of the game.
Even though his movement in front of goal was a major cause of concern for the Manchester City backline, the fact that his finishing did not live up to standard overshadowed that and Nunez stood on the receiving end of some amount of criticism and trolling online.
There is absolutely no doubt that even if he finished 50% of the number of chances he generated for himself through his perfectly timed runs, the Reds would have been in the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, who was regarded as one of the very best strikers in front of goal for the Reds during his heyday, had his say over Darwin Nunez. Here is what “The God” said about the 23-year-old Uruguayan, via Liverpool Echo:
“Some people might say he is unorthodox and raw but I think he has proven in the short time he has been at Liverpool that he will be one of those players who will be a fan favourite because he will give you everything.”
“You want to work at every aspect as a striker but we’ve seen plenty of good things. OK, at times he can be a little bit cumbersome or clumsy at times but if he wasn’t like that then you’d see a different player. He is who he is and will score goals for Liverpool. He can be unorthodox but you know as a defender you’re in for a game against him.”
Liverpool’s Agent of Chaos in Darwin Nunez
Fowler expects Darwin to score goals for the Reds in his unorthodox way. And when Robbie talks about scoring goals, one just listens. But in all seriousness, a neat observant would know that Nunez’s movement in front of goal is of the highest class and one could compare him to Timo Werner during the German’s time at Chelsea.
Slowly but surely, the goals will come his way. He is only six months into his six-year contract with Liverpool and there is absolutely no doubt in the author’s mind about the fact that Darwin will be an absolute superstar for the Reds in the coming months, and we are ready to witness him rock Anfield like he did when he played against Liverpool for Benfica.
In 19 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, he has nine goals and three assists. There is absolutely no doubt that he will bring a surge to these numbers, but the fact that the Reds paid a huge amount of £85m for him would have made a certain section of fans want immediate results from the player which is obviously a big ask.
There are a flurry of games coming Liverpool’s way now and Darwin would hope to make the most of his opportunities. He is truly the definition of never letting the opposition know your next move, and hopefully, he is much more consistent with his goal-scoring now.

To have the backing of someone like Fowler would come as a huge boost, not just for the player but for the fans who have been in two minds about Nunez themselves.
