Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez speaks on his future amid Liverpool interest
Enzo Fernandez will be fresh in the memory of football fans for winning the Young Player of the Tournament award at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar wherein he was a crucial part of the Argentina side which won the tournament. The SL Benfica midfielder is also a transfer target for Liverpool.
The 21-year-old has three goals and five assists in 24 appearances for the Portuguese outfit after securing a transfer over the summer from South American giants River Plate. His aggressive work rate both offensively and defensively is wonderful, and the player is showing all the signs of a bright future.
Liverpool are among the clubs standing linked with a move for the player, and understandably as the Reds are in dire straits when it comes to their midfield situation. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain run down their contracts in less than seven months. James Milner and Jordan Henderson cannot play for the club forever, and the Reds need long-term replacements, for at least four of their midfielders.
Speaking of his future with Ge Globo.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Fernandez conveniently shifted all the weight of his transfer speculation to his agent and here is what he said:
“I don’t know anything about that,”
“It’s up to my agent, I don’t want to get involved.
“I’m focused on Benfica, in a few days we have an important game. I have a flight at night to play in the game on Friday.”
Enzo to Liverpool soon?
Some say that there is a release clause of £106m in his contract with Benfica which lasts until the summer of 2027. That would make him tough to get on board for any club in the world, no matter how financially sound the club might be.
Fernandez is a versatile player who can play multiple roles in midfield making the prospect of signing him sound attractive to Liverpool’s scouts. He is more than capable of giving Fabinho some much-needed competition for his place in the XI, and obviously, plays his central midfield role as well as anyone for his age.
Alongside Jude Bellingham, Enzo is one of the top transfer targets for the Reds and hopefully, next summer brings along the duo to Merseyside and help Jurgen Klopp and Co. strive for more success with the squad.
