Reliable journalist reveals how the Reds repeated a trick to land trailblazing Dutch attacker

Fabrizio Romano explains how Liverpool repeated the Luis Diaz deal with Cody Gakpo

Rewind to January 2022. Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of a certain Colombian winger from FC Porto. Fast forward to 11 months later, Luis Diaz has taken the Premier League by storm and is an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Spurs back then stood ‘leading the race‘ to sign Diaz but the swiftness of Jurgen Klopp and Co. to sign the 25-year-old meant that the North London club had nothing but dust on their hands. Meanwhile, Liverpool have ended up with gold dust.

38 appearances later for the North-West giants, Diaz has 10 goals and eight assists

for the Reds and is among the first names on the team sheet. However, his long-term injury earlier this year in October meant that Liverpool would have been without the services of a left-winger for a prolonged period of time.

With both Diaz and Diogo Jota out, the Reds needed the services of a left-winger and they repeated their transfer masterclass from January earlier this year by getting on board Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo and Lucho

The similarities in the signing of Gakpo and Diaz are uncanny, to say the least. Both signed in the Winter Transfer Window, and both times the Reds were extremely quick to act on the transfer and let their rivals, in Gakpo’s case Manchester United empty-handed. Sky Sports discussed how Julian Ward was quick to snatch Diaz from Spurs and we could expect a similar article for Gakpo and United sometime soon.

Didn’t take much to convince the Reds though, as Gakpo showed his antics in the recently concluded World Cup. Same for Diaz back then, as he was too good against Liverpool in the UCL that season. Great to see the Reds beat their rivals off the field as well. Hopefully, Gakpo settles into the Premier League the way Lucho did, and the attack seems pretty much stacked now.

More Liverpool News

Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and now Cody Gakpo. Liverpool are spoilt for attacking options, and hopefully, the summer brings in a midfielder or two as well.
