Speaking to the club’s official site, Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has lavished praise on teammate Andy Robertson after the latter etched his name into Premier League folklore.
The Scottish skipper laid off an inch perfect pass for Mohamed Salah to open the scoring at Villa Park on Boxing Day. The assist took his tally in the Premier League to 54, the most by any defender in the competition’s history.
Still just 28, Robertson has a few years left in him at the top level. It will not come as a surprise should he go on to add significantly to that tally in the coming seasons.
Speaking after the game, Ox appeared less than surprised that Robertson reached the milestone. He went on to remind everyone how the Scotsman has impressed for years and is a consistent performer for the Reds.
“He’s obviously been brilliant for years.”
Signed from a relegated Hull City side in the summer of 2018, Robertson’s arrival at Anfield was not met with universal acclaim. He took some time to get used to the style but is today the undisputed first choice left-back for Jurgen Klopp.
Robertson’s overlapping runs and accurate crossing have been trademark weapons in his arsenal. It has only evolved over the years and Ox believes
the star’s numbers speak for themselves. After all, he has made the record his own after just five years on Merseyside.“He’s got a knack of it. I think his numbers talk. He’s been brilliant.”
A lot of Liverpool’s struggles in the first half of the season can be attributed to both of their full-backs struggling for form. Robbo’s new achievement will also hopefully strengthen Trent Alexander Arnold’s resolve to get back to his best.
Robertson did not enjoy the best of starts this season but the World Cup breaks appears to have reignited the flame within him. He was brilliant against Aston Villa and hopefully it is the turnaround in fortunes that Liverpool need to push on and salvage their league campaign.
