“Obvious comparison”- Jurgen Klopp compares Darwin Nunez to his former goalscoring ace at Dortmund

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp makes Darwin Nunez and Robert Lewandowski comparison

Throughout his managerial career, Jurgen Klopp has taken under his wing a few of the best players in the world. Managing a number of stars ranging from Matt Hummels, Marco Reus and a few others at Borussia Dortmund to now the absolute superstars at Liverpool.

Robert Lewandowski, one of the best strikers of this generation also saw his career take off under the German at Die Schwarzbelgen. His numbers under Klopp, and even now are absolutely staggering, but it always was not the case.

In his first season at Dortmund, the striker had only nine goals from 43 appearances, and it took time for him to settle down there. But why are we talking so much about the past? It’s simple, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp recently spoke about Darwin Nunez’s

inability to find the back of the net for the Reds in recent games and compared that to Lewy’s phase at Dortmund.

After Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa where Darwin found himself at the centre of four big chances and failed to convert even a single one of them, he was subject to a lot of trolling online from a certain section of the fans, but certainly has the backing of his manager.

Klopp backs Nunez

Speaking to The Mirror, here is what Klopp had to say comparing the situation of both players and instilled a lot of confidence in the 23-year-old Uruguayan, who also carries the unnecessary burden of proving his potential £85m price tag.

“I had this situation with Lewy but it is not only Lewy. He is the obvious comparison, I understand. It’s just about staying calm and I am super calm. The team is calm as well, the team is completely convinced and that’s really cool. Let’s hope we all, him included, stay healthy and then everything will be fine.”

Even though he is missing what seems like fifteen chances each game, his stats talk otherwise and they are not bad by any means. If anything, they are above average for a player who just moved into a new league, but the fact that someone like Erling Haaland, who is almost like a once-in-a-generation player also moved to the league in the same window, there has been a media comparison between both those players too.

In 20 appearances across all competitions for the Reds ever since his arrival over the summer, he has nine goals and four assists, most of them in the Premier League. Slowly but surely, he will adjust to the requirements of the new leagues and show the world why the Reds broke their transfer record to secure the services of the player.

Liverpool play Leicester City in the league on 30th December, and hopefully, Darwin gets on the scoresheet, silencing his critics. As long as he continues to score, there can only be one winner in this confrontation.

There is absolutely no doubt that he is a world-class talent as he has shown during his time with Benfica. It is just about getting the timing right at the Reds and trying to be the best version of himself. Hopefully, he can get as close as possible to Lewy in terms of numbers and strive to be the best he can be.
