Julen Lopetegui plays down Matheus Nunes links to Liverpool
Speaking in an interview as quoted by popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Wolverhampton Wanderers coach Julen Lopetegui has played down the rumours linking Matheus Nunes to Liverpool.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the talented Portuguese midfielder for quite some time now. He is the next in a long list of midfield names who have been linked with the Reds in the recent past.
The 24-year-old midfielder joined Wolves from Sporting CP in the summer and has quickly established himself as a mainstay in a struggling team. He has emerged as the perfect replacement for the ageing Joao Moutinho.
Nunes has played 16 times for Lopetegui’s side across all competitions this season, assisting one goal so far. He is much more than just numbers though and his performances on the pitch have been encouraging.
The talented Portuguese midfield ace is on a rather long contract that runs until the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt) which can be further extended by a year. This means that it will not be easy for Liverpool to sign Nunes.
Romano has claimed that Liverpool have been interested in Nunes for quite some time now. The interest has been prevalent even before the 24-year-old made the move to Wolves and they could reignite it now.
That Liverpool need reinforcement in midfield is no secret. Their existing midfield options do not inspire us with much confidence and they need players who can offer some fresh legs in that region.
Nunes, being just 24, has a lot of scope to grow. Playing under a manager like Jurgen Klopp will help him improve his game and become multi-faceted. This could also help Liverpool in the long run.
