Igor Biscan backs Cody Gakpo to hit the ground running at Liverpool
Speaking to Ladbrokes: Fanzone (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool player Igor Biscan has backed new signing Cody Gakpo to hit the ground running at Anfield once he makes the debut.
Liverpool completed the signing of the Dutch international a few days before the January transfer window officially started. There was some time taken to complete the paperwork regarding the work permit, hence he did not make his debut against Brentford in the league.
We can expect the former PSV Eindhoven captain to make his Liverpool bow in the FA Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night after the move was official on Tuesday.
Here’s what Biscan said when asked about what sort of an impact Gakpo can have at Anfield (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“He was already a standout player there and you could see his potential straight away. Playing off either wing or through the middle, he’s a constant threat for defenders.
“Off the back of the World Cup he’s just had, you would expect him to hit the ground running for Liverpool… but it’s not going to be easy. The team is not playing at their highest level yet, so it’s a tough environment for Gakpo to step into. But he should definitely act as a breath of fresh air for the fans and for the rest of the team. “
It is no rocket science to understand that Liverpool needed a signing for the front line after long-term injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, the latter of whom may be out for the bigger chunk of the remaining season.
Gakpo’s versatility as a forward would come in handy for the rest of this campaign. We are, at the moment, relying heavily on Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah to produce the goods upfront. The fitness of Roberto Firmino is in question as well.
Gakpo can add goals and assists to this team. He is an excellent player on the ball, can take defenders on and beat them, is good at decision-making in the final third and has a good shot in him.
The 23-year-old showed in Qatar that he is not afraid of the big stages. His performances for the Netherlands were an indicator that his high-flying numbers for PSV in the recent past were not a flash in the pan.

With the kind of form we are in, we could do with Gakpo coming in and adding something different to the team. Let’s hope he does not take much time settling in.
