“Has to fit”- Jurgen Klopp opens up on potential stint as Germany boss

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp talks about potentially taking over the German national team job

Earlier this year in April, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp signed a contract extension keeping him at the helm until 2026 (Transfermarkt). The gaffer recently opened up about taking over the German National Team after the end of his contract at Liverpool.

Poor performances from Die Mannschaft after their World Cup triumph back in 2014 have, at several times, echoed the need for a new person to manage the National Team. Back-to-back Group Stage exits in the World Cups of 2018 and 2022 plus a round of 16 exits at the Euros mean that the Germans have not been fulfilling their potential.

Klopp’s representative spoke

in early November and ruled out any possibility of him ending his deal at the Reds prematurely in favour of the job at the German national team and gave the Reds a much-needed ‘phew’ amid rumours of him leaving the club.

Speaking to BILD (h/t Liverpool Echo) about a potential switch to his country’s team after his stint at Liverpool is over, here is what the gaffer said:

“It’s not completely out of the question that I’ll be the national coach at some point. But it has to fit. And so far it hasn’t. And if I end the contract in Liverpool, then nothing will definitely be done for a year.”

The last hurrah?

All in all, he summed it up by saying although he doesn’t want to rule out the possibility of taking over Die Mannschaft, he will take a break from the game after his contract with Liverpool. Besides, ever since his appointment as Mainz manager in 2001, he has had only four months off.

That too in the time between his deal with Dortmund was done and the appointment at Liverpool. However, Klopp’s immediate focus should ideally be on how he would manage the dicey situation at the club instead of his long-term future.

The Reds are certainly in an extremely tough spot when it comes to the league and have not yet gone off the mark this season. Moreover, a 3-1 loss to Brentford away from home acted as adding fuel to the fire which is burning at Merseyside.

The midfield at the Reds certainly needs a revamp, and it will be a huge test of Klopp’s managership in the way he manages the situation at the club.

There is absolutely no doubt that he is the Reds’ most successful manager after probably the likes of Bob Paisley, but the resurgence of Liverpool coincided with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, hence there is not a lot of silverware to show for it. However, we could only hope that in the rest of his term, he gets us the extra mile which both, the club, and his services deserve.
