Liverpool are linked with a move for Milan Skriniar following Virgil van Dijk’s injury

According to Sport Witness (h/t Mirror), Liverpool could be in the mix to sign Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar after the injury suffered by Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman picked up a hamstring injury in the Reds’ 3-1 defeat against Brentford. He was taken off at half-time in that game. The diagnosis in the following days revealed that the Dutchman’s injury was worse than initially feared.

In the press conference before the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the defender is out for a considerable period of time. We are looking at a time scale of more than a month.

Skriniar, on the other hand, has been linked with a move to the Premier League many times in the past. He has been linked with Chelsea a lot, while Tottenham Hotspur were interested to sign him in the preceding summer window.

The Slovakia captain’s contract at San Siro expires in the summer (Transfermarkt), hence he can speak to foreign clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement as per the rules. The other option could be to sign him for a lesser price this month.

While all that is encouraging and there is no doubt about how good a player Skriniar is, it is laughable to think that Liverpool would sign a centre-back just because one of the players in that department is out for a month.

It is not as if van Dijk is out for the rest of this season (God forbid). We have three excellent centre-backs – Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip, who can do the job in the time the Dutchman will be out. Nat Phillips is no stranger to coming in as a backup and doing a decent job.

So, at the moment, there is no point in thinking about signing Skriniar. Klopp’s men have enough cover to go a month without van Dijk and don’t have an adverse effect on the results. We have not been playing well with him on the team too.
