Arthur Melo’s loan deal to Liverpool included a buy clause of £32m. However, understandably, the Reds now seem to let that option remain and opt against triggering the same clause. The 26-year-old Brazilian is yet to feature for the Reds after a 13-minute brief appearance against Napoli in Liverpool’s first matchday in the UCL.
As per The Athletic, Liverpool presently do not consider activating the clause written into the deal and understandably, since the player has not featured enough for the Reds and any decision taken pertaining to his contract situation should ideally happen only after the player completes a certain number of games.
As far as things stand now, Arthur will in all likelihood fly back to Turin at the end of the campaign. However, there still stands an outside chance given he rips it apart for Liverpool as soon as he returns from his long-term injury and that could make his case for a permanent deal strong.
In the present scenario though, unfortunately, nothing could go the Brazilian’s way. Unfortunate injuries mean that he still has not gotten the opportunity to prove to Liverpool fans his place in the squad. Moreover, going out of favour at Juventus also is not an ideal situation for the player.
There are other players Liverpool could chase in the upcoming transfer market if not Arthur. The likes of Jude Bellingham, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in recent weeks stand linked with a move to Merseyside, and no fan would mind even if we spend £200m on recruiting only midfielders.
The lack of depth in the middle of the park is extremely concerning, and at the time of the summer window, the prospect of Arthur joining the club gave a sense of relief as we finally got a midfielder on board. But unfortunately, the player is still to play properly for the Reds, and there is not much he can do about it now.
The club may understandably have concerns about the player’s injury history, which could impact his ability to perform at the level Liverpool desire. Ultimately, it is important for the Merseysiders to carefully consider all of these factors before making a significant investment in a new player.
