Liverpool told to target Declan Rice over Jude Bellingham
English midfield duo Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are both among the names that stand linked with a move to Liverpool. While the Reds’ interest in Bellingham is common knowledge, Rice also sees himself extensively linked with a move to Merseyside.
As Jurgen Klopp aims to refresh his team at the end of the season, Liverpool could do with a player of Bellingham’s talents. However, acquiring the talented England international could be a competitive and challenging process because of the high fees. Also, Chelsea and Real Madrid’s interest in signing Bellingham makes the process trickier.
Keeping that in mind, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino spoke of the situation and according to him, the Reds should prioritise signing Rice over Bellingham. He thinks that the Cobham academy graduate could be a better solution to Liverpool’s midfield troubles this season.
Speaking to The Times via Liverpool Echo, here is what Cascarino said on the Reds’ signing either of Jude or Rice:
“If the option is between Jude Bellingham and Rice, Liverpool should go for the latter. Bellingham is an excellent player but Rice solves the problems Liverpool are having and would provide a platform enabling those around him to shine.”
“Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have looked off the pace, with their ability to turn the ball over, make tackles and interceptions having fallen away. As a result, Liverpool’s midfield has been easy to run through but Rice is not a player who lets opponents pass him often.”
Rice or Bellingham?
Cascarino, even though partially right, could be wrong as well. With the Liverpool hierarchy identifying Bellingham as a fit for their plans, we could well and truly plan for the future with the former Birmingham City man at the core of the Reds’ midfield. However, nothing better than getting both Rice and Bellingham on board as they tend to play extremely well together, as we have seen them do so for The Three Lions.
While Rice is much more solid in defence, Jude offers the attacking output on top of his world-class defensive qualities as well. Both players have world-class footballing abilities, and it is certainly a big task for Liverpool if they ever have to choose between either player.
The author cannot help but ponder if Cascarino’s comments about Bellingham stand potentially influenced by his loyalty towards his former club Chelsea. The Blues also stand keenly interested in the 19-year-old midfielder and it is possible that Cascarino’s statements about Bellingham may be an attempt to discourage Liverpool from signing him, in order to pave the way for Chelsea to secure his services.
Jokes aside, both players have proven themselves to be elite midfielders and would undoubtedly improve the team, but it is important for the club to take a step back and evaluate their specific needs and how each player would fit into the current squad.

One thing is for certain. In case Liverpool fail to land a world-class midfielder in the summer of 2023, the club’s future could be bleak. That is why the Reds need to get on board a top-class talent sooner than later.
