Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson addresses his drop in energy levels and form

Speaking to BT Sport, as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that his form and energy levels have dropped in the past few weeks.

The England international had an excellent World Cup in Qatar, but his form has taken a downturn since then. His performance levels were not very good before the tournament as well.

As a result of that, he was dropped from the starting XI in the last two games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea. The captain has struggled for control and quality in midfield, which has cost Liverpool a lot in games.

Here’s what he said regarding his form and energy levels (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“The last few weeks, energy levels and stuff, the general mood, it has been really difficult over the last few weeks to perform to the level that I’m capable of, and that I need to be at to play for this team.”

Liverpool handed Henderson a new four-year deal in the summer of 2021, following links that he may move on. His form since then has been inconsistent, to say the least.

The Reds had one of the best seasons ever last time out, but the 32-year-old was not the key reason for that. Unlike the title-winning 2019/20 campaign, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho carried the midfield through in most games.

Talking about this season for the club, Henderson has been below-par. His main weapon, which is to be dynamic off the ball and be accurate with passing, has been way off the radar.

The Englishman’s performance against Brighton and Hove Albion last week was an indication of how bad he has been this campaign. It is at least good to know that he is aware of how under par his performances are at the moment.

Jurgen Klopp was right to not pick him from the start in the last two games. With how well the Liverpool midfield worked without the captain, the manager should keep him on the bench and let him ignite the fire in the belly to do better than he has in the last 12-18 months.
