Liverpool target Marco Asensio is close to a contract extension with Real Madrid
According to Spanish outlet MARCA (h/t Liverpool Echo), Real Madrid and Marco Asensio are close to a contract extension, with Liverpool previously linked with the player.
Asensio’s current contract expires at the end of the season(Transfermarkt) and he will be a free agent in the summer if the two parties do not agree on a contract extension and Liverpool were aware of such a possibility.
Hence, there were speculations that the club could look to sign the Spanish international for free with Jurgen Klopp impressed with what the player offers.
He would be eligible to speak to a foreign club for a transfer after January ends but Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit after fresh claims that the forward could end ups staying at the Bernabeu.
The length of the contract is agreed on between both parties however there are still discussions ongoing over the player’s salary, with Asensio holding out for more money.
Therefore, it does provide Liverpool with a glimpse of hope that they can still get their target if somehow Madrid and Asensio could not arrive at a conclusion. Asensio rose to Madrid stardom very early on in his career but failed to kickstart form mainly due to recurring injuries and the presence of worldly talent in the squad.
There are no doubts about the player’s ilk and ability to play the game and can become one of the best if coached properly.
Klopp has a knack for doing exactly that and it would not be a surprise that Asensio indeed ends up at Anfield come to the summer transfer window.

At 27 years of age, he still has a lot to offer and signing him on a free could potentially be one of our smarter signings in recent seasons. But for that, we have to hope that a new contract isn’t signed at the Santiago Bernabeu.
That will make it very hard to sign him considering Madrid will then get a big say in where his future lies.
