Brighton keen on signing Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this month
According to Daily Mail, Brighton and Hove Albion are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain if he is available for free this month.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is having his contract expire at Anfield in the coming summer (Transfermarkt). So, Liverpool have an option of either letting him go for free at the time or selling him before the end of the January transfer window.
Clubs obviously know the situation. Hence, they are interested in a deal only if the Reds are willing to let go of the midfielder for free this month. Brighton are among the clubs interested after selling Leandro Trossard to Arsenal a few days ago.
Oxlade-Chamberlain was signed by Liverpool from Arsenal for a fee of around £35m back in 2017. He had an excellent first season here before an ACL injury during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in 2018 halted his progress.
Since then, the 29-year-old hasn’t been able to get back into the team consistently. Currently, he has started a few games back-to-back due to Liverpool’s injury concerns upfront.
Does it make sense for the Reds to sell the Englishman for free now than allow him to say adios for free in the summer? Yes.
It would do two things – one opening up some wages and secondly opening a slot for a potential new addition to the squad before the end of this month.
There is no point asking for a transfer fee when everybody knows the player is leaving for free in the summer. So, the club needs to be clever here and accept the loss on a player transfer to open up a slot for a new midfield signing.

By now, we know having Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t helping the team to get back to form. A midfield addition is a must to have an improved second half of this campaign. Therefore, sell the former Arsenal man and buy or loan a midfielder soon.
