Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes a move to Liverpool would be a step up for Moises Caicedo

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson, while speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Liverpool Echo) believes that Liverpool would be at a different level for target Moises Caicedo as compared to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Johnson, who made 200 appearances for Liverpool, believes that although Caicedo is full of talent, it would not be an easy task to succeed at Liverpool.

“Moises Caicedo is a hard-working, good footballer. There would probably be a few clubs interested. However, the spotlight does change when you move to bigger clubs like Liverpool or Chelsea. This is no disrespect to Brighton, but all of a sudden, you’re expected to win nearly every week.

“Some players can’t handle that pressure and can’t perform the same way they were when your club’s happy to win some, lose some or draw some, so it’s all about the personnel really, if they can perform the same way under different pressure.”

Johnson is correct in his assessment that mental toughness plays a big part in excelling for top clubs and sometimes talent-rich players who have succeeded with a mid-table team are not able to replicate the form on moving to a bigger club.

Caicedo has performed exceptionally well since his move to Brighton but it has to be kept in mind that he has only made 26 appearances in the Premier League to date.

That is less than a full season yet all top teams, especially from the league, are after his signature. It does speak volumes of the level that he has shown since his move.

On the other hand, we are in dire need of an energetic presence in the midfield with our current midfield being too slow to press aggressively for the entire game.

Hence, reinforcements in the area are necessary and that has been noted by the club with many midfielders being linked with the club in past months.

Many predict Liverpool to go big on a midfielder in the summer transfer window and Caicedo could be one such name, only if Chelsea are not able to prise him away before.

Caicedo is one of the top upcoming midfielders of the league and can develop into a top-class player if coached well hence it is an opportunity that we can take a risk on. For the player, hopefully, this is a challenge he would be up for.

How else would he climb the ladder otherwise?
