Liverpool legend John Barnes believes West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice would be an excellent addition to Liverpool

Speaking to BonusCodeBets (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool great John Barnes believes that West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice would be an ideal signing for Liverpool.

Everyone is aware of the current midfield problems at the club and there are speculations of Liverpool going big for a top midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Barnes suggests that the Hammers captain Declan Rice would be perfect for Liverpool but is wary that there will be other top clubs vying for his signature. This includes Arsenal and Chelsea, and both clubs would certainly not make it easy for Liverpool if the trio do end up being involved in a race for the England international.

“Players like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are players that would fit into any team and fit into the type of players Liverpool want and need in midfield.

Any top four club in the Premier League would want Declan Rice. He would improve every top side in the league because he is the best defensive midfielder out there. I think that Liverpool would be ideal for him because he is the player that they actually need.

But of course, Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal would also love to have him in their squad, so he will have a lot of options when he is going to pick his next club.”

It is correct that such has been Rice’s performances for both club and country that he will have no shortage of suitors if he wishes to leave West Ham. The Hammers have been abysmal this season and currently are fighting for survival instead of a finish in the top half of the table.

Most likely, Rice would move out of the club in the coming transfer window firstly due to the fact that his contract expires in June 2024 (Transfermarkt) and secondly he has developed into a world-class player who is capable of achieving a lot in his career.

West Ham would not be able to provide him and hence a move to a big club is a matter of when rather than if for the player. Barnes is astute with his acknowledgement that Rice would instantly upgrade our current midfield and it is rather correct.

Rice would be able to steady the ship and be the perfect balance between defence and attack and at the same allow other players to flourish.

It is a deal which looks really rough on paper considering our low chances of qualifying in the top four but you just never know in the current market scenario. Moreover, with his age, the 24-year-old has all the time in his legs to be the lynchpin in Liverpool’s midfield rebuild if he wants to take that role.
