Luis Enrique says it is the ‘perfect time’ for Liverpool to sign Frenkie de Jong
Former Liverpool left-back Luis Enrique spoke about how it is the perfect time for Liverpool to get on board Frenkie de Jong. Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim that Barcelona will need to reduce their yearly wage bill by €200million in the summer.
That could mean that the Catalan giants stand cornered to put on sale a few of their highest-paid players and Frenkie de Jong is certainly among them. The Dutchman saw himself linked with the Reds last summer as well, but a move obviously didn’t go through.
Enrique took to Instagram to urge Liverpool to sign De Jong and thinks it is the “perfect time” to get on board the former Ajax midfielder. The 25-year-old could struggle to get game-time in central midfield under Xavi as youngsters like Pedri and Gavi are making an extremely strong case for themselves.
Another Dutchman at the Reds?
There is obviously no need to talk about Liverpool’s midfield problems for probably the millionth time this season. Besides, it is almost common knowledge that the Reds need a big midfield overhaul and cannot depend on the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the long run.
De Jong is a player whose quality needs no introduction. The player is an extremely effective dribbler and is capable of building play from the back as well from a central midfield role. Apart from that, the defensive aspect of his game is often overlooked. Natural because his technical ability is so good that most other parts of his game go under the radar.
Given the number of midfielders running out of contract at Liverpool in June this year, it is certainly a great option for the Reds to start their overhaul with the signings of De Jong, and long-term target Jude Bellingham.
