Carragher defends Liverpool’s poor January transfer window

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher weighs in on the club’s January window

In a transfer window where every top-six club was doing a lot of business, Liverpool were among the clubs taking a back seat and having a look at the developments instead of getting someone on board. The only player the Reds have signed this window is Cody Gakpo, from PSV.

At a time wherein it seemed like the best opportunity for the Reds to invest in their midfield, Liverpool opted to not sign any midfielders. Hopefully, this is only to divert their entire attention to a summer revamp and not anything else.

But the immediate future and the current season for the club look like it will in all likelihood finish with Liverpool not in the reckoning for a UCL spot. Our rivals are constantly strengthening their squad and it is only natural that fans expect the same from Liverpool.

Former Red Jamie Carragher talked about the club’s transfer business this month and here is what he said via Sky Sports:

“In terms of transfers, I can understand the frustrations of Liverpool fans when they see other clubs spending left, right, and center, and because Liverpool are not bringing someone in, it almost looks like they have given up on that fight for the top four.

“But what I would never want my club to be, which is what they were when I was a player, is a little bit scattergun, panicking at different times, whereas Liverpool over the last four or five years have been a model that other clubs around Europe have wanted to follow.”

“And what they do not do is panic in the transfer market, and I think Jurgen Klopp has shown that before when he has had really successful buys that he has brought in, like Virgil van Dijk, who he waited for before bringing in.”

Will the lack of business hurt Liverpool?

Carra rightly pointed out that the Reds are very shrewd when it comes to the transfer market and only spend the big bucks on the players Julian Ward and Co. think could certainly fit into the team. Moreover, the knack of not panic buying is something the Reds have maintained under Jurgen Klopp.

However, the inconsistencies and injury problems were too evident for even a blind man to notice. The drop-off in Fabinho’s quality alongside Jordan Henderson is absolutely shocking and it is clear that both these players could do with competition for their places in the XI.

Moreover, with the contracts of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner also ending in less than six months’ time, it would have been the most ideal of situations if the Reds got on board some midfield reinforcements. However, it is what it is and Liverpool have a certain way of dealing with things much differently than their rivals.

Yet to see whether the owners invest heavily in the summer, as at this time, the requirement for an overhaul is a need more than a want.
