Liverpool backed to pursue Federico Chiesa in the summer

Journalist Pete O’Rourke reckons Liverpool could set their sights on Federico Chiesa in the summer transfer window. Amid Mohamed Salah‘s dipping form, the Reds might be looking at the Italian as an option to bolster that position.

The Euro 2020 winner is a very talented player, but an ACL injury has seen him out of action for most of the current campaign and four other subsequent small injuries mean that game-time has stood hampered even more.

The 25-year-old has 19 goals and 16 assists across all competitions for Juventus in 69 appearances and was a crucial part of the Italy squad that won the 2020 Euros. There is no denying the fact that Chiesa could in fact be a great understudy at the same time, a challenger to Mohamed Salah for his place in the Starting XI.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke weighed in on Liverpool’s potential pursuit of the attacker and he said:

“Maybe in the summer, he might have the likes of Liverpool and other Premier League clubs looking at him and seeing if they can capitalise on Juventus’ financial situation.”

Chiesa to Liverpool?

Juventus are in financial turmoil as the club reeled from a 15-point deduction by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), following a probe into the club’s past transfer dealings. That could force them to do with the sale of one of their most talented players, and that is where Liverpool comes into play.

Chiesa has a contract at The Old Lady until 2025 (Transfermarkt) but could soon see himself out of the Allianz Stadium. However, the Reds could look into other avenues as well. Liverpool already have a team full of injury-prone players and adding one more doesn’t necessarily negate that particular issue.

Moreover, Salah, even with this sort of dip in form, is among the best players for Liverpool and will for sure continue to get in the goals when the team finds a balance in the midfield and the Egyptian gets better service. For the time being, he doesn’t need a replacement.

To conclude, Liverpool themselves has been plagued by injury problems in recent seasons, making it improbable that Klopp will risk playing Chiesa with his questionable fitness record but in football, nothing is certain.
