Steve Nicol urges Liverpool to sign Chelsea ace N’Golo Kante

Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante is out of contract at the Blues in the summer and is a soon-to-be free agent (Transfermarkt). The 31-year-old Frenchman at his best is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and could stand a good fit for Liverpool subject to his fitness levels.

The Reds are going through a lean patch this season and could have certainly done themselves a world of good by getting on board a midfielder in the January window. But as things stand, there is no new coming into the club apart from Cody Gakpo in this window.

Kante is a Premier League-proven player who is a serial winner and could help the Reds come out of this tough fix they find themselves in. Former Red Steve Nicol also echoed this thought and added that he would waste no time signing the former Leicester man.

Speaking to ESPN FC, former Red Steve Nicol suggested that Kante could be the answer to Liverpool’s problems. Here is what he said:

“If I am a coach of the best team on the planet, and he’s [Kante] available, then I want to sign him,”

“There are certain things that you take a chance on in football, and this is one of them.”

“You know exactly what you are getting when he is fit. You know you are getting a player, a gentleman and an experienced winner. He’s the whole package. The nicest guy in the world. Fantastic in the dressing room. You are getting everything.”

The engine that Liverpool lack?

Kante is famous for his never-ending running and top-class work rate both offensively and defensively. However, one major downside when it comes to the Frenchman is his susceptibility to injury of late.

Apart from that, there are certainly no cons when it comes to Kante and he is almost any manager’s perfect signing. He can play central midfield in addition to his natural DM role and in 262 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, he has 13 goals and 15 assists to his name.

It cannot be denied that Liverpool requires more than just the acquisition of Bellingham. Despite the 19-year-old being talented, the issues at the club are more complex and cannot be resolved simply by adding just one key player.

In fact, Liverpool need to bring in three or even four new midfielders to address the deeper problems. Whether Kante will be among a plethora or incoming or another short gap fix remains to be seen, if at all.

More Liverpool News:

The fact that the 2018 World Champion stands available on a free move is the most important aspect of this potential transfer. Liverpool’s primary target is Jude Bellingham and if they sign the 19-year-old, the Reds would also have to get on board some good value additions like Kante to help them through the transition.
