Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez talks about settling down in England and emulating Luis Suarez

Speaking to Sky Sports in an exclusive interview, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez spoke candidly about his struggles of settling down in the Premier League and how he would want to emulate his idol Luis Suarez at Anfield.

Despite making a decent start to life in Merseyside, Nunez has been the subject of grave criticism because of the chances he has missed this season. Small injuries and that red card against Crystal Palace early on haven’t helped his cause in having a rhythm to his game.

If we look at his numbers, the Uruguay international has 10 goals and three assists in 25 appearances in all competitions. Not all of those appearances have come from the start as well. So, while he is missing chances, the numbers say the going is good considering this is his first season in England.

Here’s what the 23-year-old regarding settling down in the new league and the language issues (h/t Sky Sports):

“It’s a very big change. Here, the league is stronger, more competitive. I didn’t expect it to be so strong.

“I think after those first few months of adaption, things began improving. I feel at home. I feel happy.

“I am taking English classes. I hope that, in a year and a half, minimum, I will be able to understand everything.”

It is good to see that Nunez is in high spirits despite some unnecessary criticism and pressure thrown his way. Also, the player’s willingness to learn the English language to become independent in communication will do wonders for him in years to come.

His idol and national team strike partner Luis Suarez also had a quiet first season at Anfield. He then exploded from the second season onwards and almost single-handedly took Liverpool to the title in the third year.

“Obviously, I still have many things to work on, for example my finishing. But I think the same thing is happening to me as happened to Suarez. In his second year, he tore it up.

Mind you, Darwin, there are 19 league games still to be played this season along with key Champions League clashes. The 23-year-old can yet play a huge part in how we finish this forgettable campaign.
