Jamie Carragher blames shambolic Liverpool defence for the loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher via Twitter (h/t Liverpool Echo) has criticised the team’s defence as the main factor behind the embarrassing 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It has been a few rough weeks for Jurgen Klopp and the team and many expected the team to bounce back with a good performance after the FA Cup misery at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion. However, it was the exact opposite performance and Liverpool have started to look like a shadow of their former selves.

Carragher believes the role played by the central defenders was key behind the Wolves’ victory and labels the defence as shambolic.

“It’s not too difficult to play Centre Back next to the leader of the back four, judge CB’s when they have to lead themselves. Shambolic.”

In a stern comment, Carragher has made everyone realise the importance of Virgil van Dijk, whose absence has created a bigger void than expected.

Out through injury, Van Dijk’s impact on the team is being felt more than ever with his deputies in Joel Matip and Joe Gomez not performing up to the standard expected. Ibrahima Konate suffered from a knock during the FA Cup tie against Brighton and is also expected to be out for the next couple of weeks.

From what started as a season of optimism after coming off an unprecedented quadruple chase, it just goes from bad to worse as the season progresses.

No doubt that there have been injuries to key players but many players who have shown high levels before have failed to convince many.

It is looking rather a bleak road ahead with no clear sight of where the club is headed with a top-four finish also looking way out of sight. Hopefully, our best centre-back pairing of Van Dijk and Konate are able to come back to the fold as soon as possible and prevent the constant shipping of goals.

For now, it is disappointing to see the team perform in the manner that it has been doing in recent years. The time is now rife for a revamp and a summer rebuild cannot be ignored.
