Liverpool are ready to sell defender Joel Matip in the summer
According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ready to sell defender Joel Matip in the summer after a sharp decline in his performances.
Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 from Schalke and has been a crucial figure in the Reds’ success over the past few years. However, this season has seen a sharp decline in his performances, and Liverpool are now looking to move on from the Cameroonian.
Matip has been a solid defender for Liverpool since his arrival, but his injury history has been a concern. He has struggled with persistent injuries this season, and his lack of consistent game time has seen his form take a hit.
The entire Liverpool backline to be fair have been very poor this season but the drop-off in Matip is rather shocking. He was one of the better defenders for the Reds last season but is now the fourth-choice behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.
With Matip’s contract expiring the summer after next, Liverpool might look to cash in on him in the upcoming summer rather than risk losing him for nothing in the future. The club might be open to offers for the central defender and is hoping to receive a decent transfer fee.
Despite his recent form, Matip is still a quality defender who has proven his worth at Liverpool. He has been an important part of the club’s defence, helping them to keep numerous clean sheets and win important games.
With his physicality and aerial ability, he is still a valuable asset to any team and could bring a lot of stability to the backline of a club. He is also very good at dribbling out with the ball and passing forward.
Liverpool need a revamp of the squad in the summer and Matip is one of those names that could and should go. He has been a great servant for us but the ship seems to have passed when it comes to his career at Anfield.
