Liverpool target Josko Gvardiol priced at €110 million

RB Leipzig’s Croatian centre-back Josko Gvardiol finds himself on Liverpool FC’s transfer radar. Amid rumours of a summer exit for Joel Matip, the Reds might look at Gvardiol as a replacement for the possibly outgoing Cameroonian, whose dip in form this season has been a major concern.

However, recent reports from FootballTransfers (h/t Liverpool Echo) claim that the Reds’ pursuit of Gvardiol isn’t going to be cheap by any means. The player has a long-term contract at Leipzig running until 2027 (Transfermarkt).

There is no denying the fact that the former Dinamo Zagreb is a top-class talent and deserves all the recognition coming his way after his wonderful performances in the World Cup as well. But a reported transfer fee of around €110m is unfathomable for a team like ours.

Manchester City and Real Madrid who also share an interest in the player could be better placed financially to land the defender which potentially rules out the Reds. It would be interesting to see where the major chunk of our transfer budget goes.

Gvardiol to the Reds?

Given the Reds need a complete midfield reshuffle and also need to strengthen their defence, it will come down to priorities in the end. Liverpool’s prolonged pursuit of Jude Bellingham could mean that the Reds channel most of their funds towards signing the Borussia Dortmund man.

However, as far as Gvardiol is concerned, such a hefty price tag for the 21-year-old could mean that the Reds could find themselves out of the reckoning to get him on board. In any case, there would be plenty of young defenders around the world to choose from, albeit not on the same level as Gvardiol, but much more cost-effective.

In conclusion, while Gvardiol’s potential as a top-class centre-back is attractive, his high transfer fee may not be the best option for Liverpool in the current financial climate.

As such, the club might be better off exploring alternative options that could prove to be a more cost-effective and long-term investment. Liverpool’s business model doesn’t allow for too many big-money signings in one window, but if that could be overseen, it would be the most ideal of situations for the Reds.
