Tim Sherwood wants Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma at Liverpool next season

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma has been one of the standout players of the Premier League season this campaign. Liverpool fans would have had enough of the 25-year-old already as he was one of Brighton’s best players in both times they came up against the Reds in 2023.

His technical ability on the wings in tandem with his express pace has left many a right-back around England on the ground, and Trent Alexander-Arnold is also one of his victims even with the Scouser trying to not give the Japanese an inch of space on the left-wing.

Moreover, with his top-class work rates as well, he could prove to be a top grab for any Premier League club. In 21 appearances across all competitions this season, Mitoma has seven goals and two assists to his name. The Japanese international certainly stands destined for more if he continues to grow on the same trajectory.

Could Mitoma move?

Assessing purely his style of play, he could prove a good fit for Liverpool even though we do not necessarily need more attackers at this stage. Speaking about Mitoma on Sky Sports News via Liverpool Echo, former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood said he has what it takes to fit into the Reds’ style of play.

“He has got everything. He has got all types of goals in him. He runs with the ball, he takes players on. He really commits defenders. He knows when to play safe.

“He has got the whole package, this boy, and you know by looking at him that he has got a fantastic attitude to the game. He is relishing playing in the best league in the world, which is the Premier League.

“Liverpool? Next season, son.”

The former Kawasaki Frontale man is a very exciting player to watch and even though from visuals and his style of play it seems like he could be just the right player for the Reds, there is certainly no need for Liverpool to add another attacker to their squad.

Luis Diaz is a world-class option at LW, and we have Cody Gakpo as well. In case Roberto Firmino moves on from the club this summer (highly unlikely), we could in that case get Mitoma on board and push Gakpo towards a more central role to give Darwin Nunez some competition.

However, at the present moment, there is an overflow of forwards at Liverpool. But in an injury-prone team like ours, extra depth cannot certainly hurt the Reds in any way, can it? Mitoma’s contract at the Sussex-based club lasts until 2025 (Transfermarkt) and it will be interesting to see how things turn out in case he wants to move.

More Liverpool News:

In any case, the summer transfer window promises a lot of new beginnings for Liverpool as plenty of players run out of contracts and we are one step away from a complete midfield rebuild. Certainly interesting to see what the Reds cook next summer.
